New Pattern: Athena Cowl

I am really excited to introduce you to Athena;

Athena Cowl for Artesano Yarns

I have been very privileged to work with Artesano and their gorgeous brand new yarn Artesano Nebula.
The new yarn, made from Alpaca blends with Merino Wool is a double-knit roving yarn with flecks of Donegal adding texture
to create a sophisticated tweed finish.
It is amazing to work with and so soft and snuggly I was reluctant to send the cowl back to Artesano!

Athena comes in two sizes, a short cowl for yanking over your head as you head out the door (60cms / 23.5 inches in length) and the long one pictured for a more luxurious feel (120cms / 47.25 inches in length).
It is beginner friendly with options for knitting flat or in the round.
The pattern is a mix of moss stitch and dropped stitches, with a moss stitched ribbing on either end.

Needles: 4mm needles (US size 6)
Yarn: Artesano Nebula, DK, 270 – 450 yards (247 – 411 m)
Gauge: 20 stitches and 28 rows = 4 inches in st st before blocking

I can’t show the design process of this one since I didn’t have to do a sketch or submission. I have nothing to show you other than the finished cowl but I have to say I love the styling and the finished result in general.

You can download the cowl on Ravelry and you can also see all the other wonderful patterns from the new Nebula range.

I hope you like it!

I initially designed and made this for my friend Alan.
He likes to be warm and snug but doesn’t like to get too over heated.
This cowl can be opened up as much as you like but since it is joined
at the bottom it will not fall off. This very large cowl is ideal for
the cold weather of Autumn and Winter.
Made from super soft yarn, it is incredibly comfortable.
5 press studs down the front can be opened easily to let in a little air
if you get too warm. The press studs have non functioning silver buttons
covering them, purely for the design. The cowl pulls on over your head
so it will not fall off if you open too many press studs.
There are lots of different ways to wear this.
(PDF download only)
or see them on Ravelry.

All Done

Ninja Mask of Awesomeness

Terrys Ninja Mask (of Awesomeness) is complete. It was actually done a couple of days ago but I’ve been waiting for him to stand still and let me take a photo.

These were done quite late last night so there is a lot of shadowing unfortunately, but them’s the breaks love.

I did find knitting this a bit boring at the end. I was happy when it was done. The shoulders grow quicker than you think though to be fair so I was actually shocked when I saw how far down it was after cast off.

Ninja Mask of Awesomeness

I got a bit carried away with the nose though and it’s much larger than it should be. But we can put that down to extra breathing space. Ok? Ok.

Anyway, he tested it out last night.

And he was very pleased. Said it worked a treat. His little face is all warm again while on his motorbiking travels.

I made one slight modification to this pattern. Since Terry is pulling a helmet on over the top if this, the helmet was initially pulling it down and it was difficult to get into place. So I have weaved some elastic through the top so it stays in place around his eyes and nose.

Over all, I would recommend this for the bikers amongst you. Esp in this climate. Apparently, it makes the bike quieter too. All Ninja esk like…

Work In Progress

I have decided to try to do a weekly post about the current work on my knitting needles.

I said a few days ago that, now I’m back to being almost stress free (yeh, whatever…) I am starting Ninja Mask (of Awesomness) for Terry and then my Knitting Workshop to be come a knitting super hero…or something like that.

So this is it so far. The Ninja Mask for Terry. This is at the point under the chin about to start on the neck after the decreases.

This pattern is not for the light hearted knitter though. There are no set instructions for each size. You have to do a fair bit of maths and working out, measuring and trying on to get it right.

This did put me off at the beginning. I’m not a big fan of a pattern where I have to do a lot of work on the maths side of things. I’m useless at maths, that’s why. Not great for a wannabe knitting pattern designer! Probably why I stick to hats 😀

I decided to give the pattern a go in the end for…well, for love really. Terry would have been sad if I didn’t try to make it for him, even though he said he didn’t mind. Plus, once you get going it flows on it’s own. It’s also kinda fun hearing Terry shout “Oh my God, it looks like a face!”

I’ll keep you up to date on the progress. I’m past the stage in the photo now. The neck is done and tonight I will start the shoulder section.

In a few days I might have a picture of Terry wearing his brand new Ninja mask like he’s always dreamed of.

He is super excited. I kid you not.
