    1. Hi there!
      The buttons holes are made with this section of the pattern:

      Next Row: K4, *K2tog, K4, rep from * to end.
      Next Row: P4, *Yo, P5, rep from * to end.

      When you K2tog (Knit 2 stitches together) you make a hole. Then,
      when you follow that row with adding Yo (place the yarn over the needle) you put a stitch back so the hole remains and the knitting doesn’t change shape.

      I’m sorry if I’ve gone into too much detail as I’m not sure how advanced at knitting you are. You could be amazing! But you could have just started yesterday 🙂

    This is ideal for a beginner. It will take a while to grow but it will be worth it and it will help you with button holes for future projects.
    I hope you are enjoying knitting. Once you get the hang of it you have endless possibilities and it’s very gratifying.

  3. Hey I was trying your pattern and this part

    Next Row: K4, *K2tog, K4, rep from * to end.

    Next Row: P4, *Yo, P5, rep from * to end.

    Doesn’t seem right, the k2tog doesn’t equal with the yo cuz of the cast on is 43 sts and it’s k4 k2tog that’s equals 6 . I’m a little confused ! :S It is a very cute pattern, and I’ve got to that part and I’m kinda stuck .

      Thank you for spotting this! I have not even realised that this has been here. Basically the pattern started as a cast on of 40 sts, in that case the button hole rows would fit, however, I later changed it to cast on 43 sts (can’t remember why) but I’ve obviously got the two muddled together here.
      My massive apologies to you and anyone else who has got to this point and got stuck.

      This is what you will need to do now:

      Next Row: K3, * K2tog, k5 rep from * to last 5 stitches, K2tog, K3

      Next Row: P4, *yo P6 rep from * to last 4 stitches, yo, K3.

      I’ll get this changed immediately above and slap my wrist for not noticing.

  5. Hi there! I found this, and think it is just about the most adorable thing ever! I’m fairly new to knitting and just want to clarify. You work Rows 1, and 2 alternating until your work is the desired width around your neck. Then you work the 2 other different Rows and then repeat Stocking Stitch 4 more rows, and Bind Off. I know it sounds like I’m just repetitive here, but I want to make sure I understand this completely before I attempt it. Thank you so much!!

      The buttons are all vintage from my Mums button tub. She gave me it last year as she doesn’t really bother with crafting any more. It’s great to rummage through and find all the best ones!

  7. Dear Kelly: I know I’m “late to the party” with this one, but hope you don’t mind me asking a question. It’s regarding button size. I’m a beginner and think I can handle this cowl (yay! LOL). Have seen so many nice ceramic buttons on Etsy which are usually referred to as “small”, “medium” or “large” w/ no measurments. What size buttons should I be using for this awesome cowl?

      I don’t mind you asking a question at all!
      For this cowl I would use medium or large. I would probably go for large over all as medium is a bit difficult to tell exactly what size they are going to be. All the button pictured above are around 2.5cm’s (1 inch) across. Anything smaller could pop through the hole by itself.
